I have always been a ‘goals’ girl. I have goals both in my personal and professional life. I feel a bit lost without goals. I have ‘new year goals’ and ‘financial year goals’. I am happy when I have goals and know what I have to achieve. But before two years I never wrote goals down. I have heard numerous business coaches say “you have got to have goals and you have to write the goals down.” But I never understood the importance of writing the goals down. Two years ago I was a bit upset that my success rate in reaching my goals was falling a bit. I spent some time thinking about what I was doing wrong and came up with a few ways I can improve my success rate. At the top of my list was to write my goals down. I must confess that I was a bit skeptical about this. Reluctantly I went to the stationery shop and bought a beautiful notebook. I came home. I sat down with a cup of coffee and start writing my ‘one year goals’. After a month I sat down with my notebook again and crossed off the goals I had achieved. It was a good feeling. And then I did this the following month and then soon I kind of got addicted to sitting with my notebook at the end of every month and reviewing where I was. I loved it. I soon found that my success rate had more than doubled. Writing the goals definitely works for me. It gives me more clarity. It gives me a purpose. On the days when I feel a bit disillusioned I sit down and go through my goals and this kind of puts me back on track. I now look at my goals every two to three days. It’s not because I forget what my goals are but looking at them frequently kind of cements the goals in my mind. I am now a strong advocate of writing the goals down. It’s not enough to have goals; you have to write them down.
