1. First you should always pull ideas for tattoos from things that you like and things that you are deeply into. Do not go and get a tattoo just because you saw someone with one and you like their tattoo. Remember that a tattoo will be with on your body forever and that it should be something from inside your heart. Whatever you do, never be pressured into getting a tattoo, because you will almost always regret those tattoos. Tattoos are forever and therefore they should state something about you and what you stand for. If you spend time thinking about the things you love and things that you identify yourself with, you are likely to come up with some great tattoo ideas. For example I love money, women, freedom, happiness and the outdoors. Personally I am not a very good artist, so if I were to go get a new tattoo (lets say a whole sleeve) - I would tell the tattoo artist all the loves of my life and have him come up with something. After I get a visual picture, and can then easily change things and get a better idea of EXACTLY what I want.
2. Once you have some rough ideas it is time to go online and look for some images, remember that you want the perfect tattoo, each time you get one. Some places you could look for a tattoo would be in clip art. You can search using Google's image search feature or go to Microsoft online clip art gallery. Both will lead you to great source materials that will help in the beginning of the design stage.
3. Now you can take your source materials (photos or clip art) and show them to a tattoo artists. You may also want to try some initial sketches if you are artistically inclined, like I said I am not. Even simple line art or pigeon scratches can tell you tattoo artists a lot about what you are looking for, these are professional artists. So take everything you can get together and show it to your tattoo artist and then let them design the tattoo for you. Remember the more accurate and detailed you can be with your description the happier you are going to be with the results and the whole process will be much easier. Remember, a tattoo is forever.
4. Most tattoo artists will then provide you with a design shaded in and with color and the line art of the design. If you are getting this done online then you can take that to your local tattooist and find someone to tattoo you. You can often ask for referrals from the original tattoo artists.
